Education International is saddened to hear of the death of Gareth Young, Assistant Secretary General of NASUWT – The Teachers' Union, on December 14th.
Gareth Young was a valued colleague at NASUWT, and the union "is still struggling to cope with this news," said NASUWT General Secretary Dr. Patrick Roach. "It's really devastating."
Recognizing Young's contributions to education in the UK, Roach added, "Gareth has been a proud ambassador for teachers and quality education. Our sadness reflects the loss we are feeling today, as is being felt by Gareth's family and NASUWT. "
He added that Young worked closely with Education International "as NASUWT's chief officer in international affairs, building on his previous contributions to Education International."
Education International: Valuable contribution will be missing
Education International Secretary General David Edwards reiterated Roach's words, highlighting Young's valuable contribution to the Education International Research Network, the International Summit on the Teaching Profession, and the Network on Educational Solidarity.
"We will miss Gareth's contribution to the future of the international trade union movement and the teachers cause," he said.
Education International offers its deep condolences to Gareth Young's relatives, friends and the educational community.
